Embracing the Mom Bod: Tips on Being Trendy & Confident After Baby

It's easy to get caught up in the resolutions of weight loss and fitting into our pre-pregnancy jeans, but this mama is embracing her mom bod and encouraging you to do the same!

Postpartum clothes? What’s that? As a mom, we all know oh so well that 75% of the time (especially if you have more than one child) getting back into your clothes can be tricky and sometimes frustrating. Not everybody experiences the “snap back” and let’s be honest, we’re really not trying to purchase a new wardrobe. You have this new body that just went through this amazing experience of childbirth, and now you’re stuck trying to figure out how to dress it. When figuring out what to wear postpartum, the first thing you need to keep in mind is to be patient with yourself and give yourself grace.

It’s so easy to become doubtful and self-conscience after having your baby because even though we are told time and time again, "YOU JUST HAD A BABY", being patient with ourselves and fully coming to terms with the time it will take for our body to get back to where it used to be is always a challenge. My biggest piece of advice for postpartum fashion is to be confident! Love yourself and your new body where it is right now. So instead of being upset and feeling defeated, accept it, and dress accordingly. I will be sharing some tips not only about HOW to dress the postpartum body and still be trendy and fashionable.

#1: Leggings/Postpartum Leggings

Leggings are and will be your best friend if you haven’t already figured that out! The stretchier the waist, the better.  A simple pair of black leggings go a long way. Not only will they pair with anything, it makes it possible to still look cute and put together while staying comfortable at the same time.

#2: Mom Jeans

So, depending on your comfort level, you can go a size or two up on a few pair of jeans (thrifting is an option if you would like to save some money) or you can grab a good pair of maternity jeans. Attempting to fit into your pre-baby jeans is a no go for a minimum of 5 weeks after childbirth. I never wore maternity jeans during my first or second pregnancy, but with this third baby!!! I was up and down the maternity section of any department store that had one.

#3: All Black

Let’s just be honest, Black is your best friend (before, after, and even if you’ve never been pregnant). Wearing all black and throwing in a splash of color with accessories or a printed shoe will surely have you looking Oh So Fine. Also, add some dimension in your ensemble by throwing on a colored cardigan, or vest (depending on the weather).

#4: Palazzo Pants

These by far are some of my fave pants known to man! And that's no exaggeration. The right pair of palazzo pants will give you the comfort, the stretch, and you will be trendy at the same time. They are so flowy. They personally make me tap into my inner Tracee Ellis-Ross lol. I recently purchased a snake print pair from Boohoo.com and I am in love.

#5: Shapewear

Why would someone even need shapewear when they just created a baby from scratch? Shouldn’t we get a break from looking flawless THIS ONE TIME? (The answer is YES!) However, post-birth shapewear isn’t about looking better - after birth is when shapewear actually becomes the MOST functional. It’s not about looking good; it’s about feeling comfortable. How? Well, here are a couple of benefits that wearing post-pregnancy shapewear provides:

  • Helps aid your body in returning to its pre-pregnancy glory - Post-maternity shapewear helps aid your body in returning to its pre-pregnancy glory, softly guiding it towards where it should recede. You’ll appreciate the extra abdominal support!
  • Helps you to feel more comfortable - Shapewear can also help you feel more comfortable during your first postpartum weeks, when everything seems to be dangly and achy and out-of-place. Containing this feeling can also help you feel more confident during this critical time.
  • Helps create a buffer between your stitches and your regular clothes - Got a C-section? Shapewear helps create a buffer between your stitches and your regular clothes, so you can focus on what’s really important (your new baby!) instead of what’s not (your C-section scar).
  • Helps you to regain your pre-pregnancy posture - Postpartum shapewear can also help you regain your pre-pregnancy posture, acting as a soft reminder to broaden your shoulders, sit up straight and put your proud mama face on!
  • Helps to ease your back pain - Still got some aches and pains in your back? Don’t fret - its normal! This is clearly linked to the changes in posture that occurred during your pregnancy. Wearing shapewear can help ease back pain, or remind you to stand up straight!
  • Helps you to feel more confident - Of course, if shapewear was a godsend for bloaty days pre-pregnancy, imagine how much confidence it’ll give you post-pregnancy! If you need to be out and about (or are returning to work), wearing shapewear after pregnancy can help you feel more confident and prepared during these uncertain, but magical times.

#6: CONFIDENCE

Sis, you are beautiful, you are sexy, you are attractive and you are amazing. Regardless of the time it takes for you to “snap back”, your worth or self-esteem is not defined by the changes that your body goes through, especially after having a baby(s). Girl, embrace that new body so when you bounce back it will come from a place of love, and not from a place of dislike for your new body. The most important postpartum mindset shift that needs to happen around how you see your postpartum body is this: It’s not about getting your body back, it’s about figuring out how to move through life in this NEW body that you’re in TODAY. That doesn’t mean don’t workout, it means embrace, honor, and admire your body for its strength, power, and grace right NOW!

XoXo,
